I want to blog more.

I feel like I need a subject to focus on to really make sure I stay on track. You know how bad I am at concentrating on one thing. Having this blog (the one you are reading now) with no clear direction or theme makes me want to write about everything... or nothing (how profound :). I have at least 30 'drafts' that never made it live for one reason or another...who knows, maybe this post will be trapped in there as well.

Please reader (I'm pretty sure there is only one of you out there), help me come up with a clear and focused theme for Danny posts. To help you get started, here are some things I'm interested in:

The Actionscript Society is a VIP Flash and Flex developers' group, meeting every second Tuesday. I don't know what it is, but I have been buying a ton of domains over the past month. I think I get creative bursts and just have to buy buy buy. Luckily domains are relatively inexpensive....

Which brings me to my much more costly habit...shortcodes. These suckers cost $1000/month...but I seem to be buying these with almost as much fervor as the domains.

Anyone know of a good 12 step program?

Ruby Tuesday and Actionscript Society

Next Tuesday, June ~~5th~~ 12th ID345 will begin a monthly Ruby on Rails developer group (Ruby Tuesdays) as well as a Flash/Flex/RIA developer group (Actionscript Society). These events will happen simultaneously in each of our conference areas the first Tuesday of every month (forever and ever) with before and after mingling. These events will be free and open to the public. Come one, come all.

New ID345 Office

The ID345 posse is hard at work turning an old building in Denver's warehouse district into our new home. We have almost 5000 square feet of building and about a 5000 square foot back yard to convert. So far we have taken down all the non structural walls to really open the space up. I am caked in dirt and sweat (yum) and probably shouldn't be getting my keyboard dirty...that said, if anyone wants to come help, get down here to 2930 Larimer with some grubby clothes. I'll buy you a beer.

PocketFuzz Roadtrip!

We headed out on the road in our 27' Airstream yesterday morning. We are on our way to Austin TX for SXSW. I am so excited. We hit the road at around 10am and made really good time. The truck and trailer performed famously. We got a little crazy and decided to call it a night around 3:30 am.

Denver Music Rocks!

My buddies Dan and Adam from Morning After Records put on an amazing show last Friday. It was the CD release party for Born in the Flood, guaranteed to be the next breakout band from Denver. The always rockin and on point Photo Atlas put on a great show. The 14+ members of Nathan and Stephen were awesome. I had never seen them before and they had a really fun performance. Meese started off the evening. I'll write a full review when I get some more time.

Almost 900 people came to the show. Amazing.

Virgin Earth Challenge

Richard Branson and Al Gore just announced the "Virgin Earth Challenge"

The Virgin Earth Challenge is a prize of $25m for whoever can demonstrate to the judges' satisfaction a commercially viable design which results in the removal of anthropogenic, atmospheric greenhouse gases so as to contribute materially to the stability of Earth’s climate.

This sort of contest has historically been successful, the Ansari X Prize for the first non government spacecraft, the Orteig Prize for the first transatlantic flight, and the Board of Longitude was created to award a prize to the first solution to accurately determine longitude. (I just watched a great show about the Board of Longitude and the winner, John Harrison, last weekend of the Discovery Science channel...what timing!)

Late last year Branson also announced Virgin Fuels, a company focused on creating a non polluting jet fuel. Obviously Branson knows his companies and products have been responsible for creating this problem, but his dedication to stop and reverse the pollution is commendable.

This weekend was CRAZY!
The 1st Annual Denver Zombie Crawl was an amazing success. A huge zombie made its way down 16th street mall. Busses were surrounded, restaurant windows were clawed at, blood was spread everywhere. We slowly added zombies along the route including two surprise zombies from San Francisco. Jordan and Leslie flew in for the weekend. How fuckin cool is that?! Best present ever! It was so great seeing them. Christy and I decided that they should move here. We took a roadtrip to Boulder and it seemed like the four of us hang out all the time. Sneak out here more guys! I hope their bosses don't read this ;)

Sunday we had a great bday dinner where 21 of my closest friends plus my dad chopsticked tables full of sushi. YUM.

I got a call from an interesting number today, at first I thought it was going to be another one of those annoying automated political calls. I initially hung up the phone...but after one more ring picked it up. Instead of a machine, the person on the other end said "Is this Danny? My name is Steve Wozniak, have you heard of me?" OF COURSE! He called to wish me a happy bday and we chatted a bit about Macs, college, San Francisco...ya, I was speechless. He is the nicest guy ever. And my girlfriend is absolutely amazing for setting the whole thing up.

Denver Art Museum

The new Frederick C. Hamilton expansion of the Denver Art Museum opened last week and to celebrate they opened their doors to the public for 36 straight hours. Christy, Austin and I decided we would go at 2:00am Saturday night. I didn't really know what kind of turn out to expect but the number of people pouring in all night really blew my mind. The building is absolutely amazing and if you've heard others describe it as something words can't explain, they are correct. This is something you have to see in person. I've lived in Denver my whole life and this was the first time I really felt Denver has something that is truly "world-class". This is an amazing building with an amazing collection. Seeing such an amazing contemporary collection in my own city really makes me excited. With the coming LAB at belmar and Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver really has an opportunity to be an art center.

We left the museum at about 5:30am and there were still thousands of people wandering around. I can't wait to go back!

I don't know how many times in the past few months people have asked me "Why do you still live in Denver?"

I travel to SF and NY about 2 weeks a month and feel like I have a good idea of what's going on in each.

I would love to live in either city, but my bigger question is how much difference total immersion in a city really makes. I feel like my visits are always educational, productive, and of course, fun. But would living in San Fran make me in tune, more productive, richer? I don't know...help me!

My bday is nearing...is this just quarter life crisis thinking?

Well, as most of you probably know, I drive a piece of shit*. A 1987 Honda Accord, gold with black tinted windows...

You may also know that I live in an interesting house in an "interesting" neighborhood.

Put these two things together and I am "profiled" and pulled over probably twice a week. This is something I have kind of gotten used to. Tonight however, I was pulled over and 2 cops got out of their car, guns drawn and snuck up on each side of my car...I had already reached into my pocket to grab my license and insurance card (remember, this happens all the time, I'm a pro!) and was told to FREEZE...ya, scary!

After a few minutes of checking me out, they let me go...

BUT

I was then pulled over AGAIN one block and 20 seconds later. WTF?!! Same deal, guns and scary...even after telling him I was JUST pulled over and handing him the other officers card, they went and did the whole check again...

Well, I am completely awake now...guess I should search for a new car eh?

*I used to have a nice car, but sold it to buy my house...

I came to San Francisco this weekend for BarCamp. And for some meetings. And to visit SXSW buddies. But most importantly, to visit Justin. I love this city!!! Its totally geek heaven. I realized what a bad blogger I am. Everyone I meet here updates their blog like 6 times a day and uploads to Flickr hourly... I need to get on the ball.

BarCamp was amazing. About 200 folks coming together to share ideas and projects and geek out. Met some really cool people and ate and drank lots of free food. I will be organizing a BarCamp Denver very soon. Email me or leave a comment if you would like to help out.

Met with Jamie, the guy we are doing the World Cup Ringtones with. We had never met in person before doing the deal but something about the phone calls felt very comfortable. We were right. This guy is super nice and has some great stuff going on.

Justin is living with his brother until he finds a place to live (probably with Jordan). I'm glad to see Justin loving the city. He seems to have really found a group of awesome people. It all really makes me want to move out here.

I am heading to NYC in a couple days. Woo!

MTV's Real World in Denver

From what I've heard from friends, having the Real World film in your city kind of sucks... Mobs of drunk folks following the cast and crew around...bars/clubs/restaurants being closed down so the realworlders can roll thru...

Obviously there is a plus side to having exposure to your home town...

Well, either way, they are here for the next 6 months or so, and id345, never missing an opportunity to play around with some technology, created Real World Spotting. The system is pretty sweet. You can text spottings into the system (303-875-5114) and they appear immediately on the site. They also come to my cell phone. I can then respond back to the system and verify the spotting. This adds a point on our google map and alerts all users to their current verified location. You can also send a "?" to our number and it will return the most recent verified place.

I encourage you to try it out...do what you will with the info, get on TV, flip off the camera, hit on the cast members, etc :)

I recently discovered ColoradoStartups.com, a great new blog by David Cohen, which as the name implies, is a site that profiles startups here in Colorado. I found the site after doing some research about Photo Bucket. I talked to David on the phone for a little while about PocketFuzz and id345, and even a little bit about our experience at Y Combinator. David wrote about us here and here. One of the early things discussed while forming id345 is the need to support other startups in a very Y Combinator sort of way. This has always been a huge part of what we want to do here. This is something we definitely want input on and is something still in the planning stages. If you are interested in helping get the id345 "unincubator" going, either as an investor, mentor, partner, entrepreneur, etc., please email me.

Hawaii

Christy and I went to Maui for her birthday. It was amazing. I don't know if I have ever spent that many consecutive days doing absolutely nothing. We spent full days on the beach. When we weren't doing that we were eating delicious food and drinking ample amounts of booze. Mat introduced us to breakfast beer, a simple concoction of OJ and beer. May sound gross, but just try it...actually tastes like it's good for you. Yum.

Christy and I got hooked on LOST and downloaded a bunch of episodes before leaving. We were watching one of the episodes as we were going in for a landing, it happened to be a flashback to a plane crashing into an island...I thought it was funny but the lady next to us was not as amused.

I will update this post with some awesome pictures of our trip soon.

Round the South West in 6 days

CTIA Wireless 2006 was just a week ago but it feels like a month has passed...or maybe its just been that long since my last blog entry. Let me do a quick recap of the crazy 6 days (without sleep). Austin and I left for the airport at 5:30 am last Tuesday. We landed, headed to our hotel, dropped off our bags and headed to MECCA. We went to some really great sessions and met some really cool people during the day.

The less than intriguing Podcasting 2.0 talk just ended. I was expecting something a little more interesting. Chris Prillo gave the impression that "better quality" is really all one can hope for in the future. Rob Greenlee had very interesting stuff going on at Mobilcast, unfortunately Chris talked so much nothing interesting was able to come out of it. Greenlee's mobile podcasting stuff sounds very cool tho. A gentlemen asked a question about pod search and I wanted to tell everyone all about Castio, but decided to save the announcement for when we launch.

Front Range BrainJam

I'm sitting here at the first "Front Range BrainJam", kind of a more structured id345. Derek Scruggs, Dave Taylor, and Brad Feld(super hero) are hosting this little shindig. I definitely like this sort of idea forum. So far all of the presentations have been pretty interesting. I presented radius and PocketFuzz, Jordan talked about id345 in general. He did a great job and I think we made an impression! I would love to figure out a way to really energize groups like this with the enthusiasm we have at id345...hmmm...

Alex King is presenting FeedLounge right now, a very cool little web based RSS reader. Slick stuff. $5/month tho? I'll stick to bloglines...

Brad Feld just gave an overview of some of his current investments in the RSS space. Its funny...I get way more excited when I see Brad on the street than when I see John Elway...does that make me a geek?

edgeio launches...

edgeio, the long awaited site from the makers of TechCrunch launched today. Its a working version of the zuvo concept I have been playing with for the past few years. I really like the idea of simple syndication thru RSS, but still feel that other tags, similar to those in the zuvo spec are necessary. That said, the site works and looks GREAT.

PocketFuzz Live!

Well, after a few intense nights of final programming, the beta version of PocketFuzz is LIVE! We actually put the PocketFuzz Ringtoner on the Morning After Records MySpace account last night. Initial response was great!

If you have no idea what PocketFuzz is, let me give you a quick overview. PocketFuzz allows any artist/band to upload thier full songs. Fans can grab any part of the songs as their personal ringtone. That section of the song is sent to the customers phone as a ringtone. PocketFuzz also allows anyone to upload MP3s they already own and edit them as well. Sweet!

Long time no post

Been awhile...
Just got back from NYC. Went to the Trovata fashion show. It was amazing. Those guys are amazing. Christy flew out a day later. I have to say, it was the best NYC trip ever. Saw some amazing stuff at PS1 and finally got to see the new MoMA. Sunday happened to have record breaking snowfall, bringing the Big Apple to a halt...well, that's what the news said. Everything still seemed pretty active to me. We figured that due to the snow, getting to the airport would take a little longer...we had no idea just how long. We took the subway to the AirTrain. The AirTrain was closed due to the weather. They channeled us over to a bus that would take us the rest of the way. We actually got to the airport in ok time, around 6:00 pm. Our place was still scheduled to depart at 8:15 when we got there. After an hour getting thru to check our bags and going thru security, we discovered that the airport stores sell booze that you can apparently wander around with. SWEET! 5 hours later we boarded the plane. 5 hours after that took off. 1 hour later we landed in Buffalo to refuel. 3 hours later we finally got to Denver.

Flash Lite 2.0 = holy crap

I downloaded the newest Flash Lite player last night. The thing costs $10 and is geared toward developers. I have to say that if you have any of the supported devices (and an unlimited data plan) its definitely worth the money. My first application download was an NYC Traffic Map. The thing blew me away. I downloaded a few other apps...including "Lady Calendar" (calculates ovulation and such). Ya, weird for me to download that but it won a Flash Lite app contest. Its pretty amazing. Flash is the killer app for mobile phones. I predict that by the end of year Flash is going to be a must have for any new phone purchase.

I want to start developing apps exclusively for this new market. Contact me if you have a mobile project idea, or have strong AS2 skills and would like to join the team.

WTF mate?! (aka UTF-8)

So I added Google AdSense to my site about a month ago. It was stuck on the Canon ads for quite awhile which kinda sucked because those companies are scam artists... After writing my post about Hostel, the ads just became ridiculous. I have a screen shot of one earlier. I'm sure this post will stop the fun since adding the word AdSense is going to now start showing those ads....

Movie Review - Hostel

So hearing that people were passing out in theaters across the country wasn't enough to deter Christy and me from going and seeing Hostel last night. Contrary to what Christy says, I was able to sit thru the whole movie. I did have a gross pre-puke feeling in my stomach/throat from the time of the first gore scene until well after we went and rented 40 Year Old Virgin. We dealt with the absolute disgusting imagery and all around disturbing premise of Hostel by laughing the whole time. I was actually very surprised by the lack of any reaction by the other 200+ people in the theater. While watching it I began to wonder if they were "in on it". Maybe the general public really is desensitized to stuff like this...

I'll give the movie 2 disembodied fingers...I don't know if they are up or down...but they are definitely separated from their host body...

All at once

Whoa! A lot of the projects that I have been involved in seem to be starting all at once. NOW. The LAB at Belmar has (finally) given us all of their content. ModFlash contracts will be signed this week. Projects with Skye Creative will probably start within the month. All of these are on top of the id345 projects starting or in progress. Radius and Vicinite will be up in all their glory by the end of the month. PocketFuzz is so close to being done it hurts. Castio continues to rock. Mobiom is moving forward, altho I wish it was moving faster. Our shortcode was approved which is very exciting. I bet I'm forgetting something...

The past few months have been amazing. 2006 is going to be unbelievable. Its going to be a lot of work but I really feel that this year is going to rock.

Justin and I drove to Ryan's house in Boulder at 9:00 am to sit in front of our computers and press refresh on macrumors.com for 2 hours. I emailed my goals for 2006 to my friends. I figure they are not all that private so I will repost them here. Here is the email I sent out:

I figure sharing my goals for 06 makes more sense than keeping them to myself.
I would love for all of you to do the same. I think if we know what we are striving for we can help and encourage each other...

in no particular order:
-travel/live outside of Colorado (for an extended period)
-create more art
-learn photography (ya, this is related to the one above...but wanted to give it its own bullet)
-make $150k this year (and help my friends with their financial goals)
-make id345 (.com and .org) a reality and in turn, make all of its sub businesses a reality, mobiom, radius, impact, pocketfuzz, castio, zuvo, vicinite, etc
-continue to workout (more regularly)
-run
-learn the piano/violin
-grow my awesome friendships
-read more

I started looking for online violin resources. I think it would be an interesting experiment to see how much progress I can make learning an instrument purely using free online resources. Let me remind you that I have never played an instrument and know very little about it...

Canon's $75 rebate on the Digital Rebel XT ends on the 15th so I should definitely get moving on purchasing that camera. From everything I've read, its the one I want to get. Does anyone have any input on this thing?

My brain has been going non stop for the past few months.

I have been in the web world for almost 12 years now and never have I been so excited about it. The bubble was getting bigger and bigger while I was leaving high school and starting college. The possibilites back then seemed unlimited. I had some great successes both mid and post bubble but my excitement has never been on a level like it is now. I know I need to to settle down and just focus on one project. I keep rereading Paul Graham's "Ideas for Startups" and try to figure out which idea to jump on first. At the same time, I want to figure out a way to harness all of this thought and either store it away for later, or transfer it to someone else who can help develop the business. This is the goal of id345, and really the reason I started working on it...just a few more kinks to work out.

Ahhh yeah...
After our successful 24 hour programming marathon in Boston, Ryan and Justin and I decided that we were going to create a website a weekend. Last week we got the beginnings of vicinite going (I'll tell more about it when we launch). This week we are architecting what will become ID345. ID345 is an idea fruition concept that we are playing with...one of the questions we are trying to answer is what happens when you concept and develop a company in public? How will the complete transparency of all of our ideas affect the outcome? Does an "open source" company work? Stay tuned...

I've wanted to write a personal blog for a while now. I have my blog for my loft and a blog for id345. Maintaining a blog for a specific subject is easy, but how do I choose subject matter for a topic as big and diverse as Danny Newman? I think I will keep it as "business" focused as possible but of course personal stories are going to slip in.
